New Deal To Create 21,000 Jobs In Bournemouth & Poole

A City Region Deal which was signed off at the beginning of the year has been forecast to create up to 21,000 full or part time jobs in Bournemouth and Poole over the next six years.

The Deal will prioritise the retention of students from Bournemouth University and The Arts University College at Bournemouth in the area after they graduate. The initiative will also try to secure investment funds which will create thousands of new jobs at Bournemouth Airport and the Port of Poole.

Speaking about the initiative's aims, deputy chairman of Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, Philip Warr, said: “The simple objective of the City Deal is to boost the number of jobs and economic growth in the region. The scheme will bring forward the delivery of 21,000 new jobs and 3,400 homes. We must work together as a city in a more efficient way to deliver the programme over a six year period.”

Leader of Bournemouth Council, John Beesley, said the deal would unlock the potential of areas of unused land for local businesses, boosting both jobs growth and wider economic growth within the region.

Touching on the need to retain students within the area, David Trenchard of Uniting the Conurbation (a campaign to unify Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole) said: “We need to create an environment which attracts young skilled people to the area and keeps graduates from the Universities and Colleges in the town.”
