16,000 Manchester Jobs To Be Created At New Airport City

Up to 16,000 full or part time Manchester jobs could be created by a new ‘Airport City’ similar to the ones at Amsterdam, Barcelona and Frankfurt.

Carillion plc and the Greater Manchester Pension Fund have teamed up with Chinese investors Beijing Construction Engineering Group to come up with £800 million for the deal. Outline planning permission for the development was granted earlier in the year, but the funding now available means that things could start to move quickly for the ambitious project.

The plans for Manchester Airport City include hotels, office space, manufacturing facilities and warehouses.

The 16,000 jobs in Manchester at the new airport city will be created over the course of the next 12 years. Around 6,500 temporary jobs are forecast to be created in the construction phase and a further 9,500 jobs will open up when the development is complete.

John Leech, MP for Manchester Withington, welcomed the announcement, saying: “This is great news for south Manchester and it is estimated it will bring in 16,000 more jobs to the Manchester area. This reaffirms the government’s commitment to job creation. The airport city adds to the 60,000 new jobs HS2 will bring to the area and go even further in bridging the North-South divide.”

Over 20 million people pass through the North West airport each year, but the Manchester Airport Group hope that the development will see even more flights heading for the city as international businesses are attracted to the region.
