Graduates In Scotland Landing More Jobs

Statistics released by the Scottish Government reveal that more students in Scotland are finding a graduate job or training opportunities after leaving university.

The statistics aren’t fully up to date, covering the 2011 and 2012 academic year, but suggest that six months after completing a degree, around 9 in 10 graduates had secured a job, a place on some form of training programme or go on to postgraduate study.

3 in 4 of the Scottish graduates who had found a job in the UK had moved into a profession or management level position.

Mike Russell, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “These figures show that our universities are leading the way, with graduates more likely to go on to further study or employment than graduates from the UK as a whole.”

President of NUS Scotland, Gordon Maloney, also welcomed the government’s figures, saying that it was fantastic to see graduates in Scotland converting their degrees so well, and at better than the national average.

Mr Maloney did, however, point out that more still needs to be done to create further new job opportunities for young people:

“We’ve welcomed the Scottish Government’s focus on youth employment, but the simple fact of the matter is that the problem isn’t that we have too many graduates, but that we simply have too few jobs. Investment in higher education, coupled with job creation, is a sure-fire way to grow the economy. It’s vital that we recognise that it’s not something we can solve in isolation, and that business, universities and government are working together, and improving outcomes for graduates,” said Mr Maloney.
