Amazon To Create 15,000 Christmas Jobs For 2013

Amazon UK, the online retailing leviathan, has announced that it is looking to fill 15,000 Christmas jobs for 2013.

With Christmas shoppers adding a huge surge in purchases from Amazon, the company looks for pickers, packers, delivery staff and people to fill many other support roles to help them expedite their orders in the lead up to the festive holidays.

The company’s expansion in the UK over the last year has led to Amazon creating around 50 per cent more temporary jobs for the Christmas holidays than it did in 2012. The jobs will be split between England, Scotland and Wales - with roughly 11,000, 2,500 and 1,500 respectively.

Thousands of Christmas jobs will be created at Doncaster, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough and Rugeley Amazon distribution centres in England. Scottish vacancies will be added at Dunfermline, Gourock and Inverclyde - and further positions will be created at Swansea in Wales.

Amazon UK’s operations director, Catherine McDermott, said that last year, on their busiest day in the run up to Christmas, they made over 3 million sales - which amounts to over 2,500 customer orders every minute.

Ms McDermott also pointed out that many people who were taken on for temporary positions last Christmas moved into longer term contracts with Amazon after the New Year. She anticipates that the same will happen after Christmas 2013:

“During the Christmas season, seasonal associates play a critical role in making sure we meet increased demand from customers. As we continue to expand our UK operations, we expect many hundreds of these temporary associates to move into permanent positions as has been the case in previous years,” said Ms McDermott.

Last year, around one in ten of the staff that were recruited on a temporary basis for Christmas made the transition into a permanent role with Amazon UK. If the same ratio transpires in 2013 then Amazon could create around 1,500 more long term roles to swell the ranks of the 6,000 permanent staff they already employ in the United Kingdom.
