Rising House Prices Create 25,000 New Full & Part Time Jobs

New figures from the Office for National Statistics show that rising house prices in the UK have created over 25,000 new full or part time jobs during May, June and July of 2013.

The surge in estate agents jobs represents an increase of over 11 per cent in the total number of people employed in the industry within a three month period. There are now almost a quarter of a million people employed in the real estate sector of the UK.

Across all sectors, 80,000 new full or part time jobs were created and almost one in three of the vacancies were for estate agents.

Writing on his blog The Jobs Economist, John Philpott, a specialist commentator on the UK labour market, was encouraged that so many jobs had been created in real estate and practically all other areas of the private sector. He did, however, balance the news with a worry about worsening youth unemployment and the north/south divide:

“The summer jobs surge was not matched by a corresponding fall in unemployment because more people entered the workforce. Indeed youth unemployment and male unemployment increased slightly (up 9,000 and 15,000 respectively), and the south of England performed generally better than the north.”
