It is estimated that around 1,000 full or part time Worcestershire jobs will be generated now that a £20 million broadband deal has been signed off between the county council and BT.

Over the next three years, BT will roll out cutting edge, high speed broadband to over 50,000 private homes and local businesses in Worcestershire. The substantial increases in broadband connection speeds will lead to much higher levels of efficiency at companies, facilitating quicker order processing and allowing them to create tens of hundreds of new jobs across the county.

Deputy Leader of Worcestershire county council, Simon Geraghty, sang the praises of the new BT deal and said that broadband was an essential component of the UK business economy now. Along with gas, water and electricity, councillor Geraghty said broadband had become ‘almost a fourth utility.’

“This project will allow Worcestershire to compete as a place to do business. Three years ago the Government set out a clear ambition, which was to get superfast broadband to 90 per cent of homes - we’ve gone one further by including businesses too, and we think we’re unique in the country in doing that,” said councillor Geraghty.

Once installed, the new technology will allow businesses to connect to broadband at speeds approaching 80 megabytes per second.

Highlighting the power of change that such internet connection speeds can bring to companies, Tony Stephenson of Traplet Publications - based in Malvern, Worcestershire - said that, “the same job that took seven or eight hours will now take seven or eight minutes. It’s transformed our business.”
