Ambitious Plans For 100,000 West Midlands Jobs

Ambitious plans have been announced which forecast up to 100,000 new jobs in the West Midlands.

Arup, a professional services company, say their plans, to be staged over 27 years, could increase GDP in Birmingham, Solihull and surrounding areas by close to £20 billion and create tens of thousands of jobs.

The Arup plans, called UK Central, would see a high speed rail system added and investment in housing, leisure and commercial facilities around the hub including Birmingham Airport and the National Exhibition Centre.

The proposals were pitched to developers and investors in London last week by Arup, the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership and Solihull Council.

Chairman of the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, Andy Street said: “This opportunity is undoubtedly one of the Local Enterprise Partnership’s big ideas as it has a unique combination of advantages for business growth. Investments in an expanded Birmingham Airport and the arrival of the High Speed 2 network make it vital that we put arrangements in place now to capitalise on the improved offer that UK Central will present to investors.”
