700 Essex Jobs With New Marks & Spencer Facility

Marks & Spencer, the high street retailer, has announced plans to open a new distribution centre which will create up to 700 new Essex jobs. Hundreds of other temporary jobs will be created in the construction phase of the £200 million London Gateway facility in Stanford-le-Hope, South Essex.

Chief executive of Marks & Spencer, Marc Bolland, said the new distribution centre in Essex would become their third biggest in the United Kingdom. He also divulged some of the reasons for the new investment in the city:

“As we become an international, multi channel retailer, London Gateway will help us become more efficient by cutting costs and locating our supply chain closer to our stores and our international markets. It will also help us deliver against our Plan A objectives by removing road miles and emissions from our network,” said Mr Bolland.

The new 1,500 acre M&S distribution centre along the River Thames in Essex is set to be ready before the end of 2013. On a visit to London Gateway, Prime Minister David Cameron said this was exactly the sort of investment that we need more of in the United Kingdom.
