Public Sector Jobs Up - But Thousands May Go To Private Sector

The public sector has driven jobs growth to a five year high according to recent data which took into account information from over ten thousand recruitment agencies. However, indications are that tens of thousands of jobs will be transferred from the public to the private sector in the next few years.

The total number of job vacancies across both sectors was up 8 per cent last month, taking the annual growth rate in new opportunities to 17 per cent. But it was the public sector which showed the strongest gains, with health and education jobs soaring to a 60 per cent annualised rate of growth.

However, with big public organisations like the Royal Mail and others touted to be sold off in a wave of privatisation, some estimates suggest that up to 155,000 public sector jobs will transfer to the private sector in the next few years. Other candidates for some level of privatisation include further slices of the Student Loans Company’s debt book, RBS, Lloyds Banking Group and uranium enrichment group Urenco.

Seeking to explain the shift of workload from the public sector to the private sector, Chris Paton, a director of corporate finance with professional services firm Deloitte, said, “This is bringing in private sector skills, market knowledge and insight to support the transformation of public sector organisations. Ultimately, this helps them deliver more efficient and effective services to the public."

Not everyone is convinced of the argument for drift of jobs from the public sector to the private sector, though. The Communication Workers Union (CWU), is against the sell off of Royal Mail to private investors, and is asking the 134,000 members in its union to ‘Keep The Post Public’.
