Serco Global Services, a leading business process outsourcing firm, has said it will more than double its staff numbers at its Wales call centre, leading to around 450 new Cardiff jobs.

After expanding existing contracts and winning new clients, Serco says it will increase its headcount in Cardiff from the current level of 400 to around 850 by the end of the year. One of the firm’s biggest contracts is providing call centre operatives for the online retailer Shop Direct Group. In total, Serco handles over 60 million calls a year for a variety of business sectors including retail, financial services, media and telecoms.

Giving further details of the new Cardiff jobs, Serco’s site director, Jan Lewis, said: “I am delighted to confirm these roles are new permanent roles, and we have already started recruiting. Staff training is vitally important and takes just over five weeks so we are phasing in new starters over the next few months but are looking to have recruited the full 450 by the end of September.”

It is thought that the first phase of recruitment in the next few weeks will see Serco hiring around 100 outbound sales advisers, and that the other 350 vacancies will be filled within the next six months.

Serco’s contract director, Kerry Howells, said the company was looking for job applications from people with “experience, ambition, maturity and drive.”

The contact and call centre industry provides jobs for around 30 thousand people in Wales. Cardiff itself has two other major contact centres run by Conduit and Firstsource, so the industry in massive for the whole country.
