Fierce Competition For Full & Part Time Jobs

30 Mar 2013

Fierce Competition For Full & Part Time Jobs The end of March has provided further evidence of how much competition there is for both full and part time jobs in the current economic climate.

On Wednesday, 4,000 job hunters were seen queuing in the cold for future vacancies at a shopping centre in Hampshire. And furniture store DFS has received 1,200 applications for just nine jobs at a new branch which is set to open in Bristol next month.

Speaking to the Express, Hampshire local Carol Bramley who headed the queue at Whiteley Shopping Centre, said: “Everything you read and hear these days says there are hundreds of applicants for every job going so I thought that with the fair opening at 10am I’d best get here early.”

Other job seekers compared the queue to scenes from the early stages of the X-Factor TV show.

The new Hampshire shopping centre is due to open in a couple of months time and full and part time vacancies are being advertised for over 50 shops and restaurants including Harvester, Next, Starbucks, Body Shop, Clintons, Fat Face, Topshop, and JD Sports.

At the new Bristol DFS, over 600 job hunters applied for one open vacancy as a warehouse assistant. 600 other people applied for the remaining eight positions of warehouse manager, cleaner, salesman, sales office administrator, weekend sales office administrator, upholsterer, van driver and co-driver.

Adam Hankinson, regional controller for DFS, said: “We were surprised, but this is a trend we have been witnessing around the country as new stores open. We understand this is a difficult time for people looking for jobs with the economy as it is.”
