If all goes to plan, then up to 800 full or part time Northumberland jobs could be created in the tourism sector by the end of 2016.

Over 9 million tourists visited the county two years ago, and local councils and Northumberland Tourism believe that there is scope for further footfall which could lead to hundred of new Northumberland tourism jobs in the next three years.

Tourism in Northumberland is already worth over £700 million a year, but further marketing of the county’s attractions could add another £42 million if all targets are met.

Culture, leisure and tourism officer, Claire Mason, says that the aim is to raise the profile of Northumberland as a tourism destination so that more visitors will come to the area. They also want to encourage tourists to spend more money whilst they are visiting Northumberland.

Admitting that the targets which have been set are ambitious, chair of the North Northumberland Tourism Association, Jeff Sutheran, said, “Increasing existing visitor spend, together with strategic marketing of Northumberland to bring new visitors, means it is challenging but doable, and we are very optimistic.”

Mr Sutheran added that persuading each tourist to part with just £5 more per visit would see them pretty much hitting their target of an extra £42 million for the county’s economy.

The hundreds of new tourism jobs are expected to be generated at all levels, from entry level positions to management roles, and a range of full and part time work should be advertised in the county of Northumberland in the next few years.
