A new medical centre at Queen’s University is set to create up to 500 new jobs in Belfast in the next two years.

Around 400 temporary jobs will be created in the construction phase at the Jubilee Road Campus, and a further 100 permanent Belfast jobs will open up once the medical centre is completed. The new permanent positions will consist of specialist health scientist roles in the fields of genetics, diabetes and eye diseases.

The construction of the new medical centre at Queen’s University has been contracted to O'Hare & McGovern and will have cost over £32 million by the time it opens in 2015.

Around half of the investment money was gifted by The Atlantic Philanthropies, an organisation which provides funds for population health, ageing and children & young people projects. Other donors for the Belfast project include The Queen's University of Belfast Foundation, The Wolfson Foundation and The Wellcome Trust.

The managing director of O'Hare & McGovern, Eamon O'Hare, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract to continue our longstanding relationship with Queen's. The new centre will offer world class facilities for the university with exceptional design, construction and engineering. This announcement will help to secure jobs and offers an impetus to the local construction industry.”

The Queen’s University website says that the new Centre for Experimental Medicine will attract further investment and create more new health care and biotech jobs in Belfast and Northern Ireland.
