Virgin Media, Richard Branson’s television, mobile, phone and broadband company, has said it will create over 400 new jobs in the United Kingdom.

The majority of the new full or part time jobs will be created in Swansea where over 200 of the Virgin Media positions are expected to be advertised. 130 new jobs are to be created in Manchester and a further 40 in Birmingham.

The new jobs at Virgin Media will consist of a mix of engineering vacancies and customer service roles at call centres.

An insatiable demand for Virgin Media’s super speed broadband with connected television is driving the company’s growth, leading to the hundreds of new jobs on offer in the three cities.

Speaking of the new Virgin Media jobs coming to Swansea, David Jones, the Welsh Secretary, said: “As an employer known for its solid performance, Virgin Media is proving that, although these are tough times for businesses, they are still able to grow and build.”

Once the new Swansea jobs are filled by Virgin Media, the company will be an employer of more than 1,100 people in the Welsh city.

Swansea East MP, Sian James, said it was fantastic to see companies like Virgin Media investing in local economies in the UK rather than taking jobs abroad. Business Secretary, Vince Cable, also welcomed the announcement, saying he was pleased to see so many good engineering jobs being created by Virgin Media.
