Could Graduate Job Salaries Be On The Rise?

11 Feb 2013

Could Graduate Job Salaries Be On The Rise? New figures from professional services firm KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation could point to some positive news on salaries for graduate jobs in the UK.

Providers of graduate jobs and other permanent roles are once again starting to realise that in order to recruit the best talent they need to offer enticing wages.

Last month, the REC and KPMG jobs figures show the steepest jump in wages for over twelve months and the number of workers placed in permanent jobs continued to increase.

The north of England is now outpacing other regions in the number of new permanent jobs on offer. South England and the Midlands also saw vacancy increases, albeit at a slower pace.

There is every chance that competition for the best graduates over the next few months will see an increase in the starting salaries for strong candidates.

Commenting on the new jobs figures, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation’s policy director, Tom Hadley, said: “The war for talent has begun. January saw the sharpest rise in starting salaries in well over a year after a nine-month trend of increases. The rise is caused by continued growth in permanent vacancies paired with a reduction in candidate availability.”

As particular areas where a shortage of good talent was forcing up salaries, Mr Hadley picked out the IT and engineering sectors. Other positions where skills shortages were having an upward pressure on wages included qualified chefs, drivers and sales staff.
