Western Gateway Could Create 1,500 Middlesbrough Jobs

31 Mar 2012

Western Gateway Could Create 1,500 Middlesbrough Jobs The proposed shopping development at Western Gateway could add as many as 1,500 permanent full or part time Middlesbrough jobs if plans get passed by the Council in the next few weeks.

The £120 million plan would include a new supermarket in the Cannon Park area, along with retail units that would attract further investment to Middlesbrough.

In addition to the one and a half thousand Middlesbrough jobs that would open up when the development is finished, further temporary jobs would be created in the construction phase.

Councillor Charlie Rooney, the Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development in Middlesbrough, said: “This masterplan is a bold vision for the future of Cannon Park, and one that works alongside and complements the work being undertaken in other parts of the town centre.”

“The aim is to create a thriving, 21st Century town centre which is a great place to visit, shop, do business and enjoy quality leisure time and will further cement Middlesbrough's status as the retail and commercial hub of the Tees Valley,” said Councillor Rooney.

The Western Gateway proposal will go in front Middlesbrough Council's Executive this coming week and will then be subject to a month-long public consultation before a final decision on the future of the shopping development is reached.
