Tesco has announced that it will create 20,000 full or part time jobs over the next two years as it seeks to shake off the memory of February’s activists demonstrating at one of its stores over the Government’s Right to Work scheme.

Bosses at Tesco say that around 10,000 of the positions will be part time jobs and that many vacancies and apprenticeships will be given to young people who are struggling with unemployment.

In the United Kingdom, Tesco employs close to 300,000 staff making it the nation’s biggest employer from the private sector. Over 70,000 of the company’s workers are under 25 years of age and the supermarket says it wants to continue to support young people who are looking for jobs.

Chief Executive of Tesco, Richard Brasher, said that in the current economic climate it was important for big businesses to take responsibility for investing and creating new full and part time jobs in the UK.

“We will invest in more staff on the sales floor at busy times, greater expertise and help in the crucial areas of fresh food, and enhanced quality and service across our stores at all times. To deliver this we’re going to strengthen our customer service team: 20,000 more staff across our stores over the next two years,” summarised Mr Brasher.

Prime Minister David Cameron welcomed the new jobs announcement by Tesco: “Their commitment to creating jobs and opportunities for young people at what is a difficult time for the economy is fantastic news for the UK as a whole and for those people they will help into work.”
