Cramlington Shop Plans To Create 700 Northumberland Jobs

29 Feb 2012

Cramlington Shop Plans To Create 700 Northumberland Jobs Up to 700 full and part time Northumberland jobs could be created now that a shopping development in Cramlington has been passed by the council.

Developer Hammerson says that up to 250 temporary jobs could be created in the construction phase, with a further 450 permanent positions to open up on a full or part time basis once the development is complete.

The new shopping facility, which will consist of four retail units, will be built once the existing B & M Bargains store and a former garden centre at the site have been demolished.

Project director at Hammerson, John Grinnell, was pleased that they had been given the green light by Northumberland County Council’s planning committee.

“We are delighted that the planning committee gave us permission to build new stores in Cramlington town centre to encourage new retailers to come to town and create new jobs. The new shops will complement the state-of-the-art Vue cinema and restaurants and will put Cramlington town centre at the heart of the community,” said Mr Grinnell.

Some local residents in Cramlington were concerned about a build up of noise and traffic around the new retail facility but planning officer John Dowsett said that the new shops would bring national retailers to the area and increase further investment.
