A potential 60,000 full and part time Manchester jobs could be created in the city centre and surrounding areas if a number of major regeneration projects go ahead in the next few years.

Up to 57,000 jobs could be advertised in the city centre alone before 2015 with projects such as the expansion of the Spinningfields area, the restyling of St Peter’s Square, the relocation of the Cornerhouse cinema and two new hotels.

According to a report from Manchester council, the projects could create as many as 80,000 jobs in the wider Greater Manchester area.

Commentating on the thousands of Manchester city centre jobs that could be created, Sir Howard Bernstein, chief executive of Manchester council said: “What job forecasts tell us is we've got the potential to create so many thousand jobs over the next five or ten years and our job is to create the places and opportunities for the private sector to come and invest.”

“Part of it is about how we link the city centre with transport, the labour market and broadband, making sure we've got the latest connections, but equally a lot of it is about creating new quarters like the Co-op, First Street, Spinningfields which are going to provide landowners and developers with the confidence to invest,” added Sir Howard.

Manchester city centre already employs thousands of people in tourism, leisure, retail, education and many other sectors, but the additional jobs that could be created before 2015 will be a massive boost for the region.
