Virgin Media, the cable operator, has announced that it will create over 600 new jobs in Manchester, Swansea and other parts of the United Kingdom.
Due to increased demand for its broadband services and TiVo on-demand TV, the company is expanding its call centre facilities and recruiting more apprentice engineers.
Up to 500 call centre jobs will be created by Virgin Media, with 250 of the jobs to be filled in Swansea and the majority of the other jobs vacancies to be advertised in Manchester. The company will also be looking for 120 young people to join its apprenticeship scheme in various parts of the UK.
Speaking about the 250 Swansea jobs that will be created, council leader Chris Holley said the news was fantastic for the city in the current economic climate. He hoped that the new jobs from Virgin Media, combined with existing service sector employers such as Virgin Atlantic and the Admiral Group, would generate even more interest in Swansea and attract further investment from other businesses.
Virgin Media currently employs in the region of 12,000 staff in the UK, so the new jobs in Manchester, Swansea and other places represent a significant increase in employees. Much of the current success of the company is down to an insatiable appetite for on demand television.
Virgin Media’s Cindy Rose explained: “Essentially people are watching more TV - whether that's on demand, suggestions recorded for them, or as a result of new and exciting interactive experiences.” She added that only BBC1 and ITV1 were now more viewed than on demand programmes.
