Greggs To Add 800 Full Or Part Time Jobs In 2012 Greggs, the high street bakery chain, added 800 jobs to the UK economy in 2011 and expects to create around the same number of full or part time jobs in 2012.

The firm has just announced bumper figures for the Christmas and New Year period with sales up over 10 per cent, fuelled in part by the public’s appetite for seven and a half million of Greggs’ award-winning sweet mince pies.

During 2011, Greggs opened almost 100 new shops taking their total number of shops in the UK close to 1,600. The 800 new jobs they added in 2011 took the baker’s headcount to over 20,000 for the first time in their history.

The company expects to a similar number of new shops in 2012, creating hundreds more full and part time jobs in locations across the United Kingdom.

Speaking of what he anticipates the future will hold for Greggs in 2012, Chief Executive Officer Ken McMeikan, said: “We expect another year of marginally positive like-for-like sales growth in 2012 while total sales will benefit from the opening of around 90 net new shops, creating a further 800 new retail jobs and making Greggs even more accessible to customers across the UK.”

For the full calendar year of 2011, Greggs announced financial figures which showed total sales up by almost 6 per cent in spite of rising food and energy prices.
