Newport Shopping Project Could Create 1,400 Jobs In Wales

29 Dec 2011

Newport Shopping Project Could Create 1,400 Jobs In Wales A proposed shopping and leisure project in Newport could create up to 1,400 full and part time jobs in Wales according to developers and councillors.

The scheme, planned for the Friars Walk area of Newport, includes a shopping complex, a six screen cinema, restaurants, cafes and car parking facilities. Plans to extend the Potters Pub which already sits on the proposed site are also included in the scheme.

If the proposal by developer Queensbury is approved then building work could start in 2013 providing up to 100 new jobs in the construction phase. Hundreds more full and part time jobs would be created at the shops and other facilities when the project is completed.

Matthew Evans, leader of Newport City Council said: “The news that the Friars Walk development could potentially bring 1,400 new jobs is another positive sign that the city centre has a brighter future. We hope to be in a position to announce retailers who want to move into the new city centre retail and leisure development in the New Year, which should be more good news for Newport.”
