Up to 9,000 full or part time Northamptonshire jobs could be created now that plans for a major upgrade of the Silverstone circuit have been passed by both South Northamptonshire Council and nearby Alyesbury Vale District Council.
Initial plans for the expansion were touted back in 2007 but it has taken until now for the permission to be granted. The expansion will include an open air concert venue, a museum of motorsports, a college for engineers and racing drivers, a go-kart track and three hotels.
With the new facilities, attractions and hotel rooms available at the expanded Silverstone circuit, it is expected that more visitors will be drawn to the area as an all year round venue. It is thought that 9,000 Northamptonshire jobs could be created or sustained over the course over the next 20 years by the Silverstone development.
Managing director of Silverstone, Richard Phillips, is delighted that the two councils have approved the planning application. “This is the most important initiative that Silverstone has taken in its 60-year history as the home of British motor racing. This will help maintain Silverstone’s position as a leading global centre for sport, leisure, education and technology and retain its position as a world-leading motorsport destination,” said Mr Phillips.
Andrea Leadsom, MP for south Northamptonshire, said the news was good for both the county and the nation as a whole: “It will promote Silverstone as a world-leader in the motorsport industry and deliver economic growth and jobs to the area. I look forward to supporting Silverstone as their plans develop in the coming years.”
