Toyota, the Japanese car maker, has outlined new production details for its Burmaston facility that will create up to 1,500 full or part time Derbyshire jobs over the next few years.
Deputy managing director of Toyota in the UK, Tony Walker, said: “This is great news for Burnaston and Deeside. It will safeguard our current employment levels and create up to 1,500 additional jobs in the next two years, with the first phase of recruiting 500 members starting in the middle of next year.”
At the moment, there are around 2,900 staff working at the Burmston facility so the new vacancies created will increase the headcount at the production plant by almost 50 per cent. 500 of the new full or part time Derbyshire jobs at Toyota will be created in 2012 and the remaining 1,000 will be advertised the following year.
In addition to the jobs created directly at Toyota, Mr Walker also said that production of the new generation Ausis hatchback in Derbyshire would also safeguard and create hundreds of other supply chain jobs throughout the UK.
The Prime Minister, David Cameron, also welcomed the news and saluted the staff at the car manufacturer: “This investment and the jobs it will create provide a terrific boost not just to the local economy but to the whole country, and is a tribute to the great skill, hard work and sheer professionalism shown by the Toyota workforce.”
Earlier this month, Nestlé also gave some welcome jobs news to the area when they announced they would be creating 300 new full or part time Derby jobs over the next three years at its coffee production facility in Tutbury. The company said it was looking to increase the number of students, graduates and apprentices that it employs in Derbyshire and across the UK.
