USA’s Lear Corporation, the Fortune 500 company famous for its automotive interiors, is set to create 300 new Sunderland jobs over the next three years.
The corporation will set up a multi million pound plant on the Rainton Bridge Industrial Estate in Sunderland and will initially manufacture automotive seating foam for the nearby Nissan facility.
The Lear Corporation provide jobs for over 90 thousand people worldwide and have a turnover of $12 billion a year.
The new Lear Corporation is forecast to be completed and open by the end of 2011 and recruitment for the first 150 Sunderland jobs has already started. Another 150 full or part time jobs will created further down the line as the new plant ramps up production.
Leader of Sunderland City council, Councillor Paul Watson said of the new jobs coming to the city: “I’m delighted that one of the world’s leading automotive component companies has chosen to locate its first UK manufacturing facility in Sunderland. The decision will create more than 300 skilled job opportunities in the long-term for the city and underpins Sunderland’s Economic Masterplan by strengthening the city’s automotive manufacturing sector.”
Councillor Watson added that the Lear Corporation announcement took the total number of new full and part time Sunderland jobs created in the last decade to 15,000.
