students triumph at flower show
23-May-2007

Students triumph at flower show Students have taken on the very best in an unusual form of horticultural work experience.

Garden design students from University College Falmouth are celebrating after winning a bronze medal for their garden entry at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show.

Their "chic" garden called Portgwyr (Green Harbour) combines a Cornish arts cafe with gallery space.

The students describe their design as celebrating the Cornwall of today, based on a new era of industry, education, creativity, innovation and tourism.

Karen Narramore, one of the winning three students, told the Packet: "Coming down the path… after the judging was like coming down at Christmas wondering if there was a present left for you.

"Marching down towards the garden and realising there was a medal there was wonderful."

Richard Sneesby, garden design course leader at University College Falmouth, said: "I am absolutely delighted after all the hard work, thought and effort that has gone into this garden.

"The students have had a fantastic rollercoaster ride, made lots of great friends who will be for the rest of their lives. We think they should be very proud of their achievement as are we."

It seems that the students' hard work might help their future employment prospects too.

The garden has been visited by Alan Titchmarsh and Laurence Lewellyn-Bowen as well as being featured on television and covered by film crews from Japan, Australia and Milan.
