1,000 Controversial Gloucester Jobs With Morrisons Development

1,000 Controversial Gloucester Jobs With Morrisons Development A controversial Morrisons supermarket development could create up to 1,000 full or part time Gloucester jobs according to potential developer LXB.

The proposed store is set to be built on the Metz Way site in Gloucester on land that has been unused for more than 20 years. Provisionally named ‘The Railway Triangle Corridor’, the development would also include over 140,000 square feet of business space in addition to the 71,000 square foot Morrisons superstore.

If the development goes ahead then the total cost would be in the region of £34 million - but LXB say that no public money will be required for the project.

Chief executive of LXB, Tim Walton, said the arrangement with Morrisons would, “enable the site to be opened up without recourse to any public funds and, along with the employment space, we expect it will create up to 1,000 jobs in an area that suffers from high unemployment.”

Around 400 of the Gloucester jobs are forecast to be created at the Morrisons store itself. The balance of 600 jobs would be created as the business space is filled by companies and restaurants moving to The Railway Triangle Corridor site.

Not everyone is happy with the proposed development though. This Is Gloucestershire reported the views of disgruntled locals earlier today:

“What is the point of a local council which does not do what the local people want? It's disgusting, we do not need anymore supermarkets,” said Jim Dillon, echoing the views of some other Gloucestershire residents.

The decision as to whether the development goes ahead is now with Gloucester City Council and, if successful, the project could get under way next year and be ready to open in 2013.

MP for Gloucester, Richard Graham, sounded like he had already made his mind up about The Railway Triangle Corridor site when he said: “This is a significant step forward to replacing an enormous area of derelict wasteland at the heart of our city, with about a thousand light industrial jobs.”

“I am delighted that the LXB plans for land decontamination, new roads and a new industrial park aim for completion in 2013. Strong support from businesses and communities for our bid for enterprise zone status for the Railway Triangle Corridor will help attract good businesses both in the Triangle and the Barton sites,” concluded Mr Graham.
