A new Co-op supermarket depot in Lanarkshire is set to create up to 300 full and part time jobs in Scotland.
The new distribution centre opens today in the Newhouse district of Lanarkshire and has cost £25 million. It is a state of the art depot and takes up over 500 thousand square feet – or the equivalent of 18 football pitches. The facility also has green credentials as it will use rainwater for refrigeration and to flush toilets.
The depot will distribute goods to over 600 Co-op stores in Scotland and Northern Ireland and will employ 1,000 staff in total when it is fully operational and running at maximum capacity. At that stage the facility will be making over 3,500 store deliveries each week.
Chief executive of the Co-operative Group, Peter Marks, spoke with enthusiasm about the new facility and the full and part time jobs it will create: “Newhouse is an excellent location to serve our stores across Scotland and Northern Ireland and is the latest major investment in our logistics network. Our new regional distribution centre is also a major investment in and commitment to the local community and will not only provide major employment locally but will also help further boost the local economy for many years to come.”
