£20,000 Bonus For A Graduate Teaching Job (If You Get A First)

30 Jun 2011

£20,000 Bonus For A Graduate Teaching Job (If You Get A First) If you are a student who expects to perform well in your degree then a graduate job in teaching could become increasingly attractive from a financial point of view.

In a consultation that The Telegraph newspaper has seen, Michael Gove (Secretary of State for Education) outlines an incentive of £20,000 in the form of a tax-free bursary for students with a first class honours degree entering the teaching profession.

The sweetener is designed to attract the best graduates into teaching jobs and will apply to key subject areas where expertise is in short supply. It is more than likely graduates entering the profession into subject areas like maths and the sciences will receive the strongest incentives.

Graduates who obtain a 2:1 in their degree could still receive an incentive of up to £15,000 to teach those subjects where there is a teacher shortage.

Other subjects are also being touted to receive tax-free bursaries but at a reduced rate. For example, there could be a £13,000 payment for graduates who enter the profession to teach languages.

It is expected that some form of commitment to remain in a teaching job for a minimum period of time will be applied as a clause to any tax-free bonuses offered to graduates.

The Telegraph report Mr Gove as saying: “There are many excellent teachers in this country, but many who could make a huge difference in the lives of children choose other professions. We value our teachers highly, but the current system of funding does not incentivise the best. The system needs to change.”
