A proposed retail and leisure complex near Pontyclun could lead to the creation of 1,900 South Wales jobs according to the developers. Not everyone in the region is 100% behind the plans though.
The £200 million project at Talbot Green near the M4 motorway would be home to a hotel, cinema complex, supermarket, food outlets and office space.
The project was announced earlier in the year but has not yet been passed by Rhondda council. Local councillors appear to have mixed feelings about the development.
Merfyn Rea, a Pontyclun councillor, stressed that it was important that infrastructure was developed before the project went ahead. So long as that was in place Mr Rea cautiously approved the plans, saying, “It’s going to increase growth and obviously growth is always welcome but they’ve got to get it right.”
Mick Antoniw, Welsh Assembly Member for Pontypridd, however, was less sure about the proposed development as there is already a retail park nearby in the Vale of Glamorgan. Mr Antoniw also questioned the number of full and part time South Wales jobs that could be created.
“More often than not when a developer applies for planning permission they will make a lot of the number of jobs they estimate will be created but history tells us that they often fall far short of what is promised. What jobs are they going to be exactly? Are they just going to take jobs from one retail park to another? If so then what’s the point of having a new retail park when all you’re doing is turning another one into a desert,” asked Mr Antoniw.
