Following on from our January news article about Amazon creating 950 jobs in Scotland, the internet retailer has just announced a further 900 full and part time Scotland jobs at a new call centre in Edinburgh.

The new staff in Edinburgh will help Amazon deal with customer services for the Kindle and some MP3 products. The new roles are due to commence when the call centre opens at the end of summer.

Allan Lyall, vice president of Amazon in Europe, talked up the qualities of the Scottish city: “Edinburgh is an outstanding location, providing us with access to a highly-skilled workforce who will help us to achieve the high standards of customer service that shoppers at Amazon.co.uk expect.”

Mr Lyall added that as the Amazon range diversified to include new products such as groceries and clothing, it was only natural that more customer services support jobs would be created.

Amazon says that the new call centre jobs, to be based at the Waverley Gate office complex in the city, will consist of 500 positions on a permanent basis along with 400 part time Edinburgh jobs.

Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland, was delighted with the new Edinburgh jobs. To have a global company like Amazon expanding its business in Scotland was great for the country said Mr Salmond.

He was also quick to praise the work skills of people in Scotland: “Amazon has a substantial presence in Scotland and this announcement is testament to the quality, strength and skills of its Scottish workforce.”

The government agency Scottish Development International is putting up £1.8 million towards the set-up of the new facility and training of the new Edinburgh recruits.
