Sainsbury’s Bumper Bonus & 6,000 New Jobs

13 May 2011

Sainsbury’s Bumper Bonus & 6,000 New Jobs Sainsbury’s, the successful UK retailer, will create 6,000 full or part time jobs and pay out a bumper bonus of £60 million to its workers.

An impressive run has seen the company post a profit of over £650 million, a rise of 9 per cent on last year’s figures. Total sales at the supermarket retailer surged 7 per cent to finish just a fraction under £23 billion.

A large part of the success story over the last year can be put down to non-traditional sales in the supermarket business such as clothing. A lucrative Christmas period also fuelled profits at the company.

Staff at the company are now set to take a share of that success as a bonus pot of £60 million is handed out to employees.

Going forward, the retailer has ambitions to add an average of two new outlets a week and will create up to 6,000 new full and part time jobs at Sainsbury’s in the process.

Chief Executive Officer at Sainsbury’s, Justin King, explained some of the reasons behind the success of his company and confirmed the number of jobs that will be available: “Customer numbers are at an all-time high of 21 million transactions every week, which is up one million on last year. Strong sales growth, combined with productivity savings and tight control on operating costs, have helped to deliver good profit growth.”

“We have added gross space of 1.5 million sq ft to our store estate, creating over 6,000 new jobs with Sainsbury's.”
