Further funding has been secured for the Staffordshire University paid internship scheme meaning that the internship will now continue until at least the end of June 2011.
The internship has a green tinge to it, with companies in low carbon products and the renewable energy sector being sought out.
Graduates must have an address in the West Midlands to be eligible for the internships but will receive £250 a week for the four weeks in which they will gain work experience with a local company. Staffordshire University is contributing £200 for each internship and the business hosting the intern will provide the other £800.
Stoke-on-Trent MP, Tristram Hunt said his city had an ‘important and successful energy intensive cluster’ and so was pleased to see Staffordshire University helping local businesses develop renewable energy with their internship scheme.
Speaking at a recent conference on green energy, Rob McKay of Staffordshire University’s Business School, said: “We will be looking to recruit high-quality individuals who meet the needs of the companies engaged in the programme. The interns will get practical, hands-on expertise of working within a company, as well as working in an area that is growing rapidly now and will continue to grow in the future.”
McKay added that the internship scheme was a benefit to all of the parties involved. The students gain some work experience in the industry, the local businesses get fresh minds involved in their company’s development and the University contributes to local economic growth and the wider UK green agenda.
