Easyjet, the budget airline set up by Stelios Haji-Ioannou, plans to add dozens more Scotland jobs to the economy this year with four new flight routes from the country.

Easyjet currently provide full or part time Scotland jobs for around 300 people but hope to increase their staffing levels in the country by around 20 per cent to swell their headcount to over 360.

Later in the year, the budget flight company will start three new routes from Edinburgh Airport and hope to carry thousands more passengers as a result. They will begin to fly from the Scottish capital to Athens in Greece, the island of Tenerife and Grenoble in France. Easyjet will also open up a further route from Aberdeen to Gatwick in London.

The increase in flight traffic from the country will allow Easyjet to create around 60 jobs in Scotland and will see them flying in the region of 3 million people into and out of the country.

Easyjet chief executive, Carolyn McCall, said of the jobs in Scotland and the new flight routes: “Scotland is an incredibly important market for us. We are launching the first direct route from Scotland to Athens, and then Tenerife and Grenoble, which gives customers the mix of beach, city and ski. All of this is done in the belief we can continue to grow in Scotland growing connectivity between Scotland and the rest of Europe.”
