40,000 Full & Part Time Jobs Could Be Created By Controversial Rail Link

40,000 Full & Part Time Jobs Could Be Created By Controversial Rail Link A controversial £17 billion high speed rail link between Birmingham and London could provide full or part time jobs for up to 40,000 people reports The Telegraph.

The newspaper says that documents due to be released by the Department for Transport next week will try to put the case for going ahead with the project by focusing on the sheer number of full and part time job opportunities that will be created.

If the project gets signed off - which ministers insist it will - then the connection between Birmingham and London could reach speeds of 250 miles per hour and take less than 50 minutes.

Many local residents along the projected route between Birmingham and London are dead set against the proposal as the rail tracks will pass through areas of countryside in Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. The Chilterns, an official Area of Outstanding Beauty, would also be affected by the development.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said that Britain should not be left behind as other countries around the world improve or implement high speed rail infrastructures.

“Our plans for High Speed Rail will directly create thousands of new jobs across the country. But these are likely just to be the tip of the iceberg as any more new jobs will come from the boom in private sector investment the new line will generate,” claimed Mr Hammond.

According to the report, the construction phase of the rail link project would create up to 9,000 full or part time jobs. The operational side of the infrastructure could add another 1,500 positions and as many as 30,000 opportunities could arise as the areas along the route are regenerated.
