New John Lewis Could Add 900 Full & Part Time Birmingham Jobs

22 Feb 2011

New John Lewis Could Add 900 Full & Part Time Birmingham Jobs John Lewis, the popular UK retailer, is set to open a new store at the redeveloped New Street station and could create up to 900 full or part time jobs in Birmingham in the process.

Once complete in 2012, the restored New Street train station will rebrand as ‘a landmark 21st Century transport hub’ at a total cost of almost £600 million. The resulting development will be triple the size of the current New Street station which was last redeveloped almost 50 years ago.

The new John Lewis store will not open until 2014 but, by the time it does, up to 900 full or part time Birmingham jobs could materialise according to Birmingham City Council. The £100 million four-storey New Street department store will also become one of the biggest John Lewis outlets outside of the capital.

The John Lewis store at New Street should provide up to 650 permanent retail jobs in Birmingham, but the council say that a further 250 full or part time positions could be created due to the construction and supply chain logistics.

Leader of Birmingham City Council, Mike Whitby, said he was ‘delighted’ that John Lewis would become a future part of the Birmingham retail family.

“We have been working to secure their presence in the city for over two years now, and to see the fruits of our negotiation borne out is phenomenal. Not only will their presence bring 900 new jobs, and create an extra £100 million of investment, it will enhance what is already a spectacular new development of New Street station,” said Whitby.
