The government is trying to encourage more students to consider applying for graduate jobs in the civil service of the European Union.
It’s not like the incentives aren’t there anyway – a starting salary for a graduate job in the EU can be around £50,000. Add into the equation possible subsidised accommodation in an overseas location and the chance to have a say in decisions that affect the world – and it’s really quite surprising that the government even needs to encourage more students to apply for such graduate jobs.
But encourage they must! Last year, despite the United Kingdom accounting for around one eighth of the total population of the EU, there were fewer applicants from the UK than any other of the member states.
And so, the Foreign Office has now launched an EU civil service careers month to try to plug the benefits of working in a graduate job for them. They aim to swell their ranks from a measly 6 per cent of EU civil service staff by raising the profile of a career in the EU with UK graduates.
Huw Davies, who works for the European personnel selection office, lays some of the blame for a lack of enthusiasm for graduate jobs in the EU on the UK’s decline in foreign language learning skills. Davies points out, however, that graduates should not be put off if they are not totally proficient in foreign languages as 80% of the work undertaken by the EU civil service is conducted in English.
“The British graduates who did apply last year performed the best, but people are unaware of job opportunities in the EU,” said Davies.
