Up to 250 jobs could be created by Electricity North West as it upgrades the existing network in the North West region. The power company, which used to be called Norweb, says that some of the new positions will be graduate jobs in the North West and some positions for local apprentices will be created.

Electricity North West currently provides jobs for around 1,500 people at its Warrington base. The new £1.4 billion upgrade investment will create 250 jobs over 5 years for office staff, IT workers and engineers.

Further North West graduate jobs could be created after the initial five year investment as there are plans to extend further upgrades over the following 15 to 20 years.

Chief executive of Electricity North West, Steve Johnson, said: “One of the things we are doing is investing in the future of local people. We are looking at a programme for apprenticeships, graduates and adult trainees to come and work for us.”

Mr Johnson also remarked that Electricity North West said that the future would bring a focus on green energy to the network.

Initial towns earmarked for the power network upgrades include Wigan, Bolton, Stockport and Didsbury and much of the investment will be spent on new connections, new equipment and replacing infrastructure such as pylons as they become obsolete.
