Tesco are continuing the scheme they started last year where they encourage their existing staff to ask friends and family if they would like to fill holiday jobs over the Christmas holiday.

In 2009, Tesco created over 6,000 temporary Christmas jobs and many of them were recruited using the ‘friends and family scheme.’

Speaking at the launch of the scheme last year, Lorna Bryson of Tesco said: “We want to give extra support to our staff’s friends and families over the festive period. By offering these temporary roles we hope to provide our staff and their relatives with extra help. Our existing staff and their families will have a little bit extra to spend on making the most of the Christmas celebrations.”

Tesco has also recently announced that their staff will receive a bunch of Christmas bonus vouchers and discounts to use at Tesco over the festive period. In total, the supermarket giant says that its 280,000 UK staff members stand to save £40 million from the vouchers and discounts.

Tesco are also set to offer all employees an extra day’s paid holiday entitlement which it claims to be worth another £15 million.

Executive director at Tesco, Lucy Neville-Rolfe, said that Christmas is always the busiest and most challenging period of the year for the supermarket. She said that: “Our staff are working harder than ever and are key to providing customers with a great Christmas. This is our thank you for all their loyalty and hard work.”
