You will have to be at the top of your game if you want to land a graduate finance job with professional services company Ernst & Young next year. So get in early and make sure you stand out from your graduate peers.
There are 700 places on the 2011 Ernst & Young graduate scheme and so far, the firm has received over 4,500 applications. That is already double the number of people that applied for the company’s graduate finance jobs by this stage last year. Also up over 100 per cent is the number of people attending Ernst & Young graduate recruitment events at campuses across the UK. The company have even had to add in extra events to cope with the demand.
The professional services industry in the UK has remained buoyant even during the economic downturn. The number of graduate jobs in finance, accounting and other professional services has actually risen by over 17 per cent according to the Association of Graduate Recruiters. All of the big professional services firms have been keen to announce that their recruitment drives are ongoing – Deliotte is looking for 50,000 people a year and KPMG is recruiting for 8,000.
Head of graduate recruitment at Ernst & Young, Stephen Isherwood, said: "Over the past two months, we’ve seen interest in our graduate programmes sky-rocket. Final-year students need to start applying for positions sooner rather than later. In an increasingly competitive jobs market, those who rest on their laurels will simply miss out. As the squeeze on the public sector starts to take hold, it’s only going to get tougher for those entering the jobs market for the first time."
