Enough Wind Could Create 70,000 Full Or Part Time Jobs

30 Oct 2010

Enough Wind Could Create 70,000 Full Or Part Time Jobs The UK Government has pledged to spend £60 million on offshore wind developments and hope to create as many as 70,000 full or part time jobs as a side benefit.

Investment and job creation on that sort of scale could provide enough energy to power 19 million households in the United Kingdom.

The news of these 70,000 potential full or part time job opportunities comes after Prime Minister David Cameron spoke to the CBI conference about some of the benefits of offshore wind energy and of how Britain could be a future leader in its development.

In recent days, three major companies have reaffirmed their commitment to put money into offshore wind manufacturing. Companies like GE, Siemens and Gamesa are all keen to invest in the development of wind energy in Great Britain and have millions of pounds at their disposal to do so. Gamesa have plans to open an R&D hub for offshore technology in London which could create up to 1,800 directly and indirect jobs.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said that it was encouraging that such companies were getting behind the movement in the offshore wind industry and creating full and part time jobs in the process. Cable said: “Renewable technology is a priority for this government, and I am delighted that foreign investors also recognise our commitment to environmentally sustainable growth. The global market for low carbon goods and services is expected to rise to over £4 trillion by the middle of the next decade. We are already the sixth largest market for low carbon economic goods and services so we are well placed in this sector."
