43,000 temporary jobs are to be advertised for the population census which is to be carried out in the UK at the end of March next year. Both full and part time positions will be available to help the government survey 28 million homes across the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) needs to fill 35,000 temporary jobs in England and Wales. In Scotland, the General Register Office for Scotland has 6,000 temporary positions on offer and The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency has already started looking for a further 2,000 people to fill their temporary census vacancies.
The census is carried out every 10 years and surveys the population on such matters as education, religion, work, ethnicity and marital status. The 2011 Census is 32 pages long and consists of 56 questions. 14 of the questions are directed to households in particular and the remaining 42 questions are for individuals to complete.
The temporary jobs on offer - in such roles as census coordinators and enumerators – will last for six weeks and will help the UK government make policy decisions about hospitals, housing and schools, amongst other services.
Glen Watson, the Census Director for the Office for National Statistics said that, "The census is not just about counting people, the information it provides is needed to plan vital services like schools, hospitals, housing, roads and emergency services. We need to give people help and support to complete and return the census questionnaire and this means recruiting the right people for this important nationwide project."
