Students taking on part time jobs in the quarter to July 2010 have helped government employment figures to break new records.
In total, 286,000 people landed jobs in May, June and July this year, the biggest fill of job vacancies since the Office of National Statistics’ (ONS) records began in 1971. An amazing 47,000, or around 16 per cent of those positions, were made up by full time students securing part time jobs while they study.
Breaking down the quarterly figures even further, 166,000 of the new vacancies filled were part time positions and the other 120,000 were full time opportunities. In the same period, unemployment dropped by 8,000 to just under two and a half million people, bringing the overall unemployment rate in the UK down slightly to 7.8 per cent.
Although we think it is great to see a generation of hard-working students who are prepared to work in a part time job at the same time as trying to get themselves a decent education, not everyone is happy with the latest employment figures from the ONS. Chris Grayling, the Employment minister, played down the job figures today saying that, “Today's jump in employment, driven by the private sector, is good news - but it doesn't disguise the fact that the system the Government inherited is failing to get people on welfare into these jobs.”
