All of you students and graduates out there who are considering Scotland for banking jobs will be encouraged by news from Virgin Money that they are creating 200 new finance jobs in Edinburgh and could add even more in the next few years.

This Virgin Money news of new Edinburgh finance jobs follows fast on the heels of our previous article about Barclays adding up to 600 new banking jobs in Glasgow.

Virgin Money, along with other new names in the UK retail banking sector such as Metro Bank, are hoping to chip away at the dominance of traditional big name banks like HSBC and Lloyds.

Virgin Money, the financial wing of Richard Branson’s Virgin empire, currently employs only 60 staff in Edinburgh, so the expansion there with a new operations centre will significantly swell their ranks in the Scottish capital. They expect to begin recruiting for the new Edinburgh finance positions in Spring next year and could add further jobs at a later date if they continue to expand in the banking sector.

In total, Virgin Money - which only received the go ahead from the FSA to form a licensed back in December last year – now employs around 300 people.

A spokesman for Virgin Money said: "Clearly in Edinburgh there is a fantastic pool of talent in banking and financial services and it makes sense to tap into that. As we grow to become a fully operational bank, Edinburgh will be the engine of growth for the bank."
