Barclays To Bring 600 Finance Jobs To Glasgow

14 Sep 2010

Barclays To Bring 600 Finance Jobs To Glasgow Barclays Bank has announced plans to bolster its presence in Scotland and create around 600 finance jobs in Glasgow as part of the expansion process. The UK banking giant is to receive £6.5 million in funding from Scottish Enterprise to assist them in their growth plans.

The 600 new Glasgow finance jobs from Barclays will be created with the opening of a new wealth management and investment banking business at the bank’s Aurora site in the area. Barclays say the new facility will become a ‘global shared services hub’ which will support some of their other business activities in finance.

The head of operations at Barclays Capital and Barclays Wealth, Ian Axe, said: "This example of collaboration between the investment banking and wealth management divisions at Barclays is an exciting development for clients, staff and potential employees in Glasgow and across Scotland."

Around 300 of the new Glasgow finance jobs are to be created straight away and the other half will be recruited for over the next four years.

The move will bring the total number of people employed by Barclays in general and graduate finance jobs in Glasgow and the rest of Scotland to over 2,000 people. In total, the financial sector in Scotland provides jobs for nearly a hundred thousand people and makes up around one twelfth of the country’s total Gross Domestic Product.

Alex Salmond, the first minister for Scotland, expressed his delight at the new expansion strategy of Barclays north of the border and enthused about the quality and strength of the finance sector in the country. Salmond also pointed out that the new plans come in the midst of competition in the finance sector from emerging markets.

Mr Salmond said: "Glasgow has a long-established reputation as global financial centre with the infrastructure and expertise that can deliver success. Barclays is already one of the top employers in Scotland and its plans to increase its presence here reinforces Scotland's status as a global leader in finance.”

This just goes to show that Glasgow and Scotland as a whole are great places to seek finance jobs whether you are a graduate or not. You could do much worse than starting your graduate banking or finance job search direct from our Graduate Finance Jobs in Glasgow page.
