4 in 5 have reservations about job applications on social networks
10-Sep-2010

4 In 5 Have Reservations About Job Applications On Social Networks According to new research carried out by Tods Murray’s Summer Law School, 4 in 5 students have reservations about using social networks like Twitter and Facebook for job applications. Over three-quarters of the students and qualified solicitors canvassed were not certain that social network sites would be any use at all when looking for a graduate job or other position.

The overall impression seemed to be that students thought that graduate recruitment via these sorts of channels was somehow unprofessional and raised concerns about the privacy of personal details.

Ashlie Turner, Human Resources Manager at Tods Murray said: “We cannot ignore social media, but I believe that the research that our Summer Law School students produced shows that we have to keep traditional values of professionalism and integrity at the heart of our recruitment processes.”

Some of the students interviewed even voiced concerns that some Twitter or Facebook accounts that were advertising graduate jobs could even be scams.

The Tods Murray’s Summer Law School survey did, however, only take on board the views of around 100 students and solicitors - and we are not sure if that is a large and deep enough sample base to simply write off the use of social networks for recruitment purposes.

What do you think? We were asked to post jobs on our Facebook site and get a lot of job applications through our social networking sites. Let us know your thoughts via the comments box below, our Facebook discussion, or Tweet us!
