farm union supports welsh students
01-Jun-2007

Farm union supports Welsh students A new bursary was launched this week to help Welsh students on agriculture-related courses.

The aim of the £1,000 bursary, provided by the Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW), is to encourage more young people to enter farming.

Among other things, applicants will have to complete a 1,000 word article on the future of farming in Wales, reports the Western Mail.

Gareth Vaughan, president of the FUW, said: "I'm delighted to launch the bursary again this year. It should be a great help towards the selected student's ever-increasing cost of further education."

He continued: "The FUW remains committed to ensuring rural colleges stay viable so that the industry can continue to receive young, highly trained technicians who have received top-quality education and training.

"We hope this bursary goes some way towards achieving this aim."

Last year's winner, Lisa Pugh, used the bursary to pursue an agricultural course at the Institute of Rural Sciences in Aberystwyth.

All Welsh students intending to embark on an agriculture-related course at university or a further education college are eligible to apply. The closing date for applications is August 31st.

A career as a farm manager in the UK usually requires a qualification from a relevant further or higher educational body.

Successful farmers are usually also fit, energetic, have good management skills and an ability to budget and keep financial records.
