Ocado, the online grocer which partners with Waitrose, has been given the go-ahead to open a huge new warehouse in Dordon near Tamworth, creating 2,000 full or part time jobs in Warwickshire in the process.

The green light was given by North Warwickshire Borough Council for an extension at Birch Coppice Business Park and Ocado has now confirmed their proposal to press ahead with the development.

The new Birch Coppice warehouse should be finished by the end of 2012. It will cost £200 million to complete and will spread over 35 acres. The site itself was estimated to have cost around £17 million to buy.

The new Ocado warehouse has been devised to deal with between 180 thousand and 200 thousand customer orders each week. The Ocado business model takes advantage of dedicated warehouses showing current inventories so that if shoppers see a product online they can be sure that it is actually in stock. They claim that such stocking strategies help them to provide a real alternative to heading for the supermarket every week.

Policy officer for Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, Graham Aylott, was pleased by the new development as they are keen to see businesses like Ocado, UPS and CEVA set up in the Midlands. Aylott said: “This is a great boost for the jobs market in north Warwickshire and the surrounding areas.”
