British Gas is creating a further 90 full or part time jobs in Southampton with 50 of them to be filled by the end of 2010. These new Southampton jobs add to the 75 positions that British Gas have already filled at their Hampshire base this year. By the close of the year, the number of staff they employ in their Southampton offices will top 700.

40 of the Southampton jobs will be on a full-time basis and will be recruited for once they have completed a new insulation depot in the city. The company will be looking to recruit energy specialists and staff with knowledge of cavity wall and loft insulation. Once up and running the new British Gas facility will assist people in improving the energy efficiency of their houses and apartments.

Head of insulation at the energy company, Wayne Smith, said of the new full time jobs that will be created: “In today’s economic climate, I’m delighted to talk about the creation of 40 new jobs in Southampton. There is much talk about utilising green technologies and cutting our energy usage, but we can only do this if we have enough people with the right skills.”

The 50 positions that British Gas are attempting to fill in Southampton before the end of 2010 are call centre jobs. Alan Eley, the general manager of the contact centre, said that now was a very exciting period for the energy firm. He said that British Gas were trying to bring novel products to the market but could only do so with the help of good staff.
