teach first gets £4m to fund graduate jobs in education
07-Jul-2010

Teach First Gets £4m To Fund Graduate Jobs In Education Teach First, a UK charity which aims to find talented people to fill graduate jobs in teaching at challenging schools across the country, has received a £4m grant from the government to help them increase the number of graduates they recruit.

Currently, Teach First place between 500 and 600 people into graduate teaching jobs but the extra money could mean that they can place well over a thousand graduates into teaching jobs in the 2013-14 academic year.

Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, said that the government wished to attract teachers of high quality for every child, no matter what their background. He said that already the Teach First charity had been successful in its aim to place high-flying graduates into careers in teaching at some of the toughest schools in England.

The new grant money will mean Teach First will be able to place talented individuals into graduate jobs teaching in primary schools for the first time. They will also earmark some of the £4m to put graduates into 1 in 3 of the most demanding secondary schools in England.

Expanding the scheme to other areas was important said Gove because ‘the quality of teachers has a greater influence on children's achievement than any other aspect of their education.’

Chief executive of Teach First, Brett Wigdortz, said, ‘We are very excited that this new support from the government will enable us to extend our reach to every region of England over time, and to begin placing our highly-motivated and qualified teachers for the first time in those primary schools who need them most in areas of highest deprivation.’
